In-N-Out Burgers coming next year to Rockwall

The famous “In-N-Out Burgers” are coming soon to Rockwall and across the DFW Metroplex from California!

The Rockwall City Council approved a 50′ pole sign last night after their Dallas architect and property manager unsuccessfully argued for a 60′ pole sign, which they said they need because their location next to the Toyota dealership requires a tall freeway sign.

More details coming soon at TheRockwallNews.com.

Rockwall to build massive youth sports complex?

At last week’s Rockwall City Council meeting, Planning & Zoning committee member Mark Stubbs presented a proposal to build a massive youth sports complex here.

Council members Matt Scott and Cliff Sevier appear to be strong supporters of the idea, based upon comments they’ve made.

According to Cliff, the many youth sports teams in the Rockwall area have to travel to sports parks to play because their aren’t any high-quality facilities here which they can use to host tournaments.

He said that visiting teams and parents spend thousands of dollars annually to travel with and support their teams. He said that he and Matt have concluded that having a youth sports complex in Rockwall would therefore be good for local businesses and the City’s sales tax revenues.

More info to come. Watch for a video news report soon here and at TheRockwallNews.com with details.

Owner, developer of The Harbor files for Chapter 11 reorganization

The company which developed and owns the lakeside entertainment and shopping district in Rockwall called The Harbor has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code.

According to a City of Rockwall news release issued late Tuesday afternoon, the City has been notified that Mariah Bay Leasing Corporation, owned by Rockwall-area residents Rob and Sarah Whittle, filed for reorganization so the company could address their financing issues and “come out of this in a stronger and better position.”

Rob Whittle says that business is actually “off  the charts” and never been better at the restaurants, movie theater and hotel, but that he’s trying to get the debt reorganized and interest rates reduced “so retailers can get the rent concessions we need to give them.”

Twelve businesses have gone out of business since The Harbor opened in November, 2006. Seventeen businesses are currently open there.

For more details about the reorganization, read the more complete story at TheRockwallNews.com.

Another one bites the dust…at The Harbor

Still another business closed last week at The Harbor in Rockwall.

Add the “Rija Boutique” clothing store to the list of businesses that have closed there:

  1. Bath Junkie
  2. Celebrity Cafe & Bakery
  3. Cote d-Azur
  4. Fashion Focus Eyewear Boutique
  5. Harbor Girl
  6. L’Egantz
  7. Rija Boutique
  8. Real Estate Information Center
  9. Savoy’s Gifts
  10. Scooters
  11. The Baby Planner
  12. Valore Italian Restaurant

Have I forgotten any? Seems like there was at least one more.

Amazing is that The Harbor’s very own out-of-date website still shows photos of the closed Fashion Focus, Harbor Girl, L’Egantz and Savoy stores on their website, and lists L’Egantz as one of their existing businesses on its Shops page and Cote d-Azur on its Dining page.

Guess even their webmaster can’t keep up!

Plus the outdated “About” page doesn’t even tell viewers when the facility opened, and includes not a current but an old video produced before the Harbor was built showing what it’s going to look like from an architect’s view.

Compare the list above to the businesses still open:

  1. Affinity Salon & Spa
  2. Agave Tappas Bar
  3. Hilton Bella Harbor Hotel
  4. Blue Canyon Kitchen & Wine Bar
  5. Cinemark
  6. Cold Stone Creamery
  7. Dodie’s Cajun Diner
  8. En Fuego Tobacco Shop
  9. Genuine Jakes
  10. Gloria’s
  11. Hollywood Nails
  12. Juvanew Medspa
  13. Potrillo De La Sandia
  14. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
  15. Ruby Tuesday
  16. Tastee Freeze
  17. Zeus

So at least 12 have closed out of about 29 (41%) businesses which have opened there since it opened (as best as I can remember).

Watch for a more complete story soon at TheRockwallNews.com explaining what’s going on at The Harbor, plus what its owners, City officials and store owners have to say about the future of this private/public enterprise.
